Podcast: Improving the Quality of Early Child Care

This podcast was really interesting to me. In the podcast they interviewed Grace Reef, chief of policy and evaluation at Child Care Aware of America (formerly the National Association of Child Care Resource and Referral Agencies). She gave a snapshot of the diversity of quality in child care within and among states across the country; explained her organization’s efforts to reauthorize the Child Care and Development Block Grant; and detailed how Congress, states and the White House can make changes that will enhance the safety and quality of early child care settings.

  1. Hi Amy,

During this podcast, I was really struck by how little is actually required of child care centers in many states. I also agree with the speaker on the relationship between low education requirements and low pay of child care workers.

    Thanks for sharing!

  2. Do you think there is enough public pressure to create the changes that are needed to improve the quality of early childhood programs in the US? As an outsider, I see a lot of discord and fighting about any issue that is placed before the house. Do you see hope in the future that there might be consensus?

  3. No, Jennifer. Not from what I heard on the news today. You would think that someone would say, "If you take away this, I'll give you that", and then someone would agree or would say, "not that, but what if I take this away, will you give me this?"
